When I first saw Yuken Teruya's toilet roll tube art I was totally smitten. Without thinking I just took out a few toilet roll tubes from my huge collection of junk and started sketching out an intricate tree. From Yuken's work it looked really easy until I almost severed my left thumb a few times and messed up the tree miserably. A plant with just four big leaves was a lot easier to craft...

DESIGNER'S RATIONALE
Chili calls for Unity. CILI BOLEH!
Chili has the power to unite the diverse ethnicity in the country, be it Orang Asli, Malay, Chinese, Indian or Eurasian… Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or Christian, a chili dish never fails! There’s nothing more charismatic than a humble chili as it has the ability to unite a nation even amidst chaos and anarchy.

Design: The four different motifs on the letters are traditional fabric prints of batik, cheong sam, sari and lace to signify the 4 major races/cultures in Malaysia i.e. Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian.

Project . Man+God by Art4Soul | Russian Dolls
The Russian Doll or Matryoshka Doll, with its multilayer structure, is a great canvas for telling a story or conveying a message in sequence. It was used as a canvas for designers to express their ideas, thoughts and views on the subject of 'man and God' and the existential quest. The Russian Doll series which featured designs from various contributors from around the world were exhibited in the recent 8th International Man&God Visual Feast 2008 in Beijing, China.

ARTIST RATIONALE
I’M A TREE! I’M NOT A RUSSIAN DOLL! is about GOD’s creation and MAN’s love for destruction. MAN has done major destruction amongst themselves, to the animal kingdom and the environment on this planet. Senseless bloodshed has never deterred MAN from obtaining what he wants out of greed. Very few people are happy with who they are, and where they are going. Every day, millions of people try to change their bodies. Many try to alter their looks with cosmetics or even plastic surgery. Scientists feel they may soon be able to slow the aging process with drugs even if it means to sacrifice innocent animals. Is it in the very nature of MAN to try to change what GOD meant for us to be? Or are we just Satan's children at war with GOD?

More Eco Shopping Bags?

We know plastic is toxic and bad for the environment but how much do we truly understand the impact it has on the environment and why are we saying ‘NO’ to plastic bags? And if we’re discouraging the use of plastic bags we should then, as designers, present a totally sustainable alternative. Sustainability is not just about choosing the right material but also making sure it's coming from a sustainable source.

Cotton industry has sacrificed a lot of workers each year due to toxicity of the usage of biochemicals, pesticides and insecticides. Cotton is the world’s dirtiest crop using a crazy amount of insecticides compared to other crops. To keep the price competitive cotton has to be manufactured in the poorest part of Delhi, Shahpur Jat in Uzbekistan, where child workers are hired to work in conditions as close to slavery. Getting paid only four ringgit a day for a 14 hour shift. 'Natural' cotton in this light is not sustainable unless it's organic cotton.

Most people are carrying eco bags as a fashion statement because marketing has succeeded in achieving a must-have status. Fashion is so prolific that we can hardly keep track but must follow, blindly.

If we truly want to save the environment, we should start designing FOR the environment and most importantly have in mind the people who makes them for us.
